Tips for Hanging Christmas Lights

The weather is cooling down, pumpkin spice lattes are back, and it’s time to start decorating your home and hanging up your Christmas lights. But before you do, check out our easy tips for hanging outdoor Christmas lights. We’ll help get your home looking merry and bright – without causing any damage along the way.

Determine Your Home's Texture

Before you begin, make a game plan dependent on the texture and surfacing of your home. Most all-purpose Christmas light
clips will work on homes with shutters, gutters, or shingles. There are even clips for clay tile roofs and clips for
putting lights on the ridge (or peak) of your roof.

Brick Homes
If you have a brick house, you can avoid any drilling by using
brick clips that will grip the bricks without damaging the walls.

Stucco Homes
If you have a stucco home, you can use hot glue or a caulk gun with construction adhesive
to mount your light clips firmly in place. Don’t want to use glue? You can use Parrot Clips instead.

Metal Roofs
If you have a metal roof, you can use magnetic clips or hooks to hang a string of lights.

No Gutters
If you don’t have gutters, you can use normal light clips by attaching
the clips to your shingles instead – simply flip the clip around.

Gather All Your Home-Lighting Tools

Make a list of everything you will need before you start the job. Map out where the Christmas lights will go and measure to be sure you have enough. You’ll want to be sure you have lights, a ladder, clips, extension cords, a lighting timer, gloves, and a tape measure.

Start At The Power Outlet

It might seem obvious, but many times individuals will begin an electric job and get to the end before finding out they’ve started with the wrong end of the cord. Check your Christmas lights for missing bulbs by plugging them in before you begin and make sure you have a long enough extension cord to reach the top of the roof where you’d like your lights to hang. You will want to choose a power outlet that is easy to get to (for turning your lights on and off) or purchase a light timer so you never have to think twice about it.

Avoid using Nails and Staples

It may seem easier to use a hammer or staple gun to quickly secure your Christmas lights to your house. However, if you want to hang Christmas lights on your roof without causing any damage, you’ll want to avoid the use of nails and staples. Plastic Christmas light hanging clips will allow you to hang your lights without creating holes or damaging the exterior of your home.

Use a Ladder or Scaffolding

Walking on your shingles and rooftop can cause damage over time. That’s why we suggest using a ladder or scaffolding.
If you need to get on the roof to hang lights or ornaments, try to walk as gently as you can and wear soft
closed-toed shoes like sneakers or tennis shoes to protect the roofing as best as you can.

Safety First

More than anything, we want to make sure you stay safe when hanging your Christmas lights. Whenever you’re doing a job that requires climbing a ladder and juggling multiple items, you’ll want to ask a friend or family member to help. Having an extra set of hands to ensure your ladder is secure or to hold string lights and clips can be super helpful when you are hanging Christmas lights.

We hope these tips will help you enjoy hanging your Christmas lights this year without damaging your roof or siding!
